Illinois State University's women's basketball team claimed a narrow victory over Northwestern University with a score of 81-77. This marks the third 'Power' win under head coach Kristen Gillespie. The game took place at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Evanston, Illinois.

The Redbirds had four players scoring in double figures. Shannon Dowell led the team with 23 points, followed by Maya Wong with 15 points, Nevaeh Thomas contributing 13 points, and Addi Martin achieving a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Dowell was particularly effective in the second half, scoring 18 of her total points during this period. She shot 7-for-15 from the field and made two three-pointers while also contributing four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

The match saw Illinois State leading by two at halftime. However, Northwestern managed to take a brief lead in the third quarter before Illinois State regained control following a nine-point run that included a key three-pointer from Caroline Waite.

In the fourth quarter, despite Northwestern's efforts to close the gap to just two points within the last seconds of play, Illinois State maintained their lead for an eventual win.

This victory is notable as it represents Illinois State's third consecutive season opener win on the road and their first season-opening win against a 'Power' opponent since defeating Illinois in Champaign during the 2010-11 campaign.

Head coach Kristen Gillespie has seen her team achieve significant victories against Big Ten opponents during her tenure, including previous wins over Illinois in 2019 and Wisconsin in 2022. Additionally, Shannon Dowell joins an exclusive group of Redbird players who have scored more than 20 points in a season opener under Gillespie's leadership.
