Illinois State defeats Southern Illinois in four-set volleyball match

The Illinois State volleyball team secured a victory over Southern Illinois in four sets at CEFCU Arena on Friday night. This win marks the Redbirds' second consecutive triumph, improving their record to 13-14 overall and 8-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). Southern Illinois now holds a 10-15 overall record and is 3-11 in the MVC.

In the first set, Illinois State initially gained a four-point lead but saw Southern Illinois rally to win the set 25-22. The Redbirds responded strongly in the second set, achieving a decisive 10-0 run that led to a 25-19 victory. The third set remained competitive, with ISU eventually pulling ahead to win 25-23. In the fourth and final set, both teams stayed close until Illinois State closed out with a 25-22 win.

Key players for Illinois State included Caitlyn Little with 20 kills, Sammi Bunch who recorded 22 digs, and Mekaila Aupiu who provided 44 assists. Khenedi Guest contributed seven total blocks for the team.

Caitlyn Little achieved her fourth double-double of the year with her performance, while Mekaila Aupiu recorded her twelfth double-double of the season. Aupiu has amassed a total of 1,100 assists in this year alone.

Illinois State will continue its home stand against Missouri State on Saturday at CEFCU Arena. The event will also serve as Senior Day for ISU, honoring four student-athletes post-match.
