Illinois State University secured a decisive victory against Northern Iowa, defeating the Panthers 31-9 at the UNI-Dome. The Redbirds improved their record to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, while Northern Iowa fell to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Redbirds began their scoring with a field goal by Ian Wagner late in the first quarter. Tommy Rittenhouse extended the lead with a touchdown run before halftime, culminating a lengthy drive. Northern Iowa responded with a field goal by Caden Palmer, but Illinois State maintained control throughout the game.
In the third quarter, Wenkers Wright scored on fourth-and-goal after an extensive drive. Although Tye Edwards' run put Northern Iowa in position for another Palmer field goal, Illinois State continued to dominate. Freshman Matt Lawson scored early in the fourth quarter, and Wright added another touchdown later.
Key performances included Rittenhouse's eighth rushing touchdown of the season and Wright's two touchdowns bringing his total to seven. Wright also achieved over 100 yards rushing for the fifth time this season. Lawson had an impressive game with 84 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Daniel Sobkowicz recorded his first game exceeding 100 receiving yards this season. Tight end Scotty Presson contributed significantly with several key receptions.
Defensively, senior safety Keondre Jackson led with nine tackles, supported by Lavoise-Deontae McCoy and others who each recorded sacks.
Illinois State will continue its road games next Saturday against Indiana State at Memorial Stadium.
