The Illinois State University Cross Country team concluded its participation in the 2024 NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Peoria, Illinois. Fifth-year runner William Sinclair qualified for the NCAA National Championship after finishing ninth with a time of 29:19.99, setting a new school record in the 10k and becoming the first Redbird to complete a 10k in under 30 minutes.
Senior Mathis Chavand achieved All-Region honors by recording the second-fastest time in program history at 30:02.82, securing a top-25 finish. Senior Zack Loomis and junior Yusuf Baig also contributed strong performances, finishing 32nd and 41st respectively.
The men's team finished fourth overall with a total score of 179 points, marking their best result since placing sixth in the regionals back in 2001. The women's team placed 19th with a total of 532 points, led by senior Mattison Plummer who finished 52nd.
Jeff Bovee, Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, expressed pride in his team's performance: "It was the race of the year for the guys... Proud of Sinclair; he's just been getting better every single race out."
Assistant Coach Jake Gillum noted that "on the men's side was a super high-energy race" and highlighted Sinclair's qualification for nationals as well as Chavand's All-Region honor.
Bovee also acknowledged the efforts of seniors on the women's team: "We appreciate all the wonderful years they put together for us... We certainly didn't finish as high as we were hoping there on the women's side."
Gillum added his praise for the women's efforts: "I was proud of our seniors for coming out and giving everything they got."
Sinclair and Chavand were named Men's All-Region award winners following their performances at this event.
