Illinois State secures home-opening win against Le Moyne

Illinois State University's women's basketball team secured a 71-55 victory over Le Moyne College in their home opener at CEFCU Arena. This win brings Illinois State's record to 2-1 for the season, while Le Moyne remains winless at 0-4.

Elyce Knudsen made a notable debut for Illinois State, leading the team with 15 points. She contributed significantly in the first half with ten points and ended the game with three three-pointers, three rebounds, and three assists. The Redbirds showcased a balanced offensive effort with four players scoring in double figures and recorded 20 assists on 25 successful shots.

Addi Martin and Nevaeh Thomas were instrumental in the post positions. Martin scored 14 points, grabbed five rebounds, assisted twice, and blocked one shot. Thomas added ten points along with seven rebounds and five assists.

Shannon Dowell was pivotal in the second half, scoring all of her eleven points after halftime. Her performance marked her third consecutive game scoring in double digits this season.

The teams were tied at 30 at halftime before Illinois State outscored Le Moyne by sixteen points in the second half. A decisive moment came during an eight-point run in the third quarter that gave Illinois State its first double-digit lead. Dowell and Knudsen each hit crucial three-pointers during this period.

Trista Fayta extended the lead further with a transition three-pointer towards the end of the third quarter. Another eight-point run sealed Illinois State's victory as they built up to their largest lead of seventeen points late in the game.

Maya Wong was another standout player for Illinois State, achieving a season-high of eight assists and maintaining an average of over six assists per game across three games.

This match marked Illinois State's first-ever encounter against Le Moyne and continued their strong home performance record at CEFCU Arena, where they have won 26 out of their last 31 games over two seasons.
