McLean County Unit School District 5 Board of Education met Oct. 16.
Here are the minutes provided by the board:
A McLean County Unit District No. 5 Board of Education meeting was held Wednesday, October 16, 2024, beginning at 6:30pm (Sign up for public comments will be open from 5:15pm - 6:15pm) at the Normal West High School, 501 N Parkside Rd, Normal, IL 61761.
1. CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL
Members present: Mark Adams, Kentrica Coleman, Stan Gozur, Kelly Pyle, Amy Roser, Alex Williams, Jeremy DeHaai. Members absent: None.
2. ADJOURN TO CLOSED SESSION (5:15p.m.)
At 5:20 Coleman moved and Pyle seconded to adjourn to closed session to discuss the following matter according to the exceptions provided in the Open Meetings Act and specified as follows:
•2(c)(1) The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity and
•2(c)(9) Student disciplinary cases and
•2(c)(11) Litigation, when an action against, affecting or on behalf of the particular public body has been filed and is pending before a court or administrative tribunal, or when the public body finds that an action is probable or imminent, in which case the basis for the finding shall be recorded and entered into the minutes of the closed meeting.
Roll Call: Ayes: Adams, Coleman, Gozur, Pyle, Roser, Williams, DeHaai. Nays: None. Motion carried.

At 6:19 p.m the Board recessed to public session

At 6:30 p.m.Coleman moved and Roser seconded to return to public session.

A. Good News - PJHS Eagle Scout Project

A beautification project was done at Parkside by Josh Bierbaum. Project was done in the front of the school, along the side and around the sign. All materials needed for the project were
donated by multiple people/groups. Sarah thanked Josh for a job well done.
B Good News - Sugar Creek/Brigham staff
Kris Pennington
The Early Learning and Development Program was recognized for achieving the Gold Circle of Quality. Scott Vogel gave a shout out to the staff of the Early Learning Program and their
commitment to the program.
C Good News - Sugar Creek Positive Celebration -
Scott Vogel and Ferah Peters
Focus of the positive celebration is to build community.
Recently a PBIS picnic was hosted for kids and families of those children who qualified for the event. Scott and Ferah recognized the Kitchen manager, Amy Kirchner, who helped make this event a success.
D Good News - NCHS Ink Spot Adam Zbrozek
Adam presented NCHS Teacher Brad Bovenkirk and the Ink Spot for being recognized as one of 10 schools nationwide to receive the George H. Gallup Award from the Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists. The Inkspot is Normal Community's student news publication. A brief presentation of the Ink Spot was shared.

Members present: Mark Adams, Kentrica Coleman, Stan Gozur, Kelly Pyle, Amy Roser, Alex Williams, Jeremy DeHaai. Members absent: None.
Public Hearing for the NCHS/NCWHS Tennis Courts Comments Regarding Public Hearing
Potentially, spring to do NCHS, and NCWHS to follow.
Coleman moved and Williams seconded to close the public hearing.
Roll Call: Ayes: Adams, Coleman, Gozur, Pyle, Roser, Williams, DeHaai. Nays: None. Motion carried.
8. SUPERINTENDENT COMMENTS
Congratulations to all of the students and staff who were recognized during Good News.
The Hauntcert will be held on 10-24 at 6:00 and 7:30 PM at both high schools. This is a wonderful music opportunity.
We are halfway through the first semester. Progress Conferences will be held on November 4. There are a number of Personnel to recognize during October: October is National Physical Therapy Month, School Custodian Appreciation, School Bus Driver Appreciation, and Principal Appreciation. Thank you to everyone for their hard work and support for our students.

A Bilingual Parent Liaison Update
Leslie Webb presented Marianela Diaz, Brigham, EJHS and NCHS and Idalia Morales, Cedar Ridge and CJHS who are the Bilingual Parent Liaisons in Unit 5. There are 615 students in the English Learner Program in Unit 5. They spoke about the program to help those English Learners in all aspects of their school experience. There was a brief presentation about the program. Following the presentation, there were some comments and questions from the Board.

13. BOARD REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE MEETING REPORTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND COMMENTS
Gozur - gave a Finance Committee update. He encouraged everyone to attend the Hauntcert.
Pyle - Some Board members attended the West Homecoming Parade.
Some members attended the IASB. Also attended the IASB Cornbelt conference with Alex. The Policy committee met and Curriculum Committee will meet on 10-17.
Coleman - Updated her committee news. Also attended the NAACP Freedom Banquet. Have a Beyond the Books meeting tomorrow.
Williams - echoed the positivity of Beyond the Books. Attended 100 Caring Adults at PJHS.
Roser - Attended Regional Planning Meetings and gave an update.
Welcomed substitute Board Clerk - Sandy Kohlhase
Adams - Solar Projects update. Also attended the NAACP Freedom Banquet. Enjoyed the West Homecoming Parade.
Congratulations to all those recognized tonight.
DeHaai - Good news reports were great to hear about. The north end bleachers at KJHS were replaced. Northpoint playground will be replaced in summer 2024. Paid for by City of Bloomington. He announced he will not be running for re-election to the Board of Education but will still be involved as a member of the CAC. Nomination petitions to be a Board Member need to be submitted the week of November 12th - 18th
