Illinois State's Tye Niekamp has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The sophomore middle linebacker delivered a standout performance in Illinois State's victory over North Dakota, securing his recognition on Monday.
Niekamp was joined by other conference honorees: Southern Illinois quarterback Michael Lindauer as Offensive Player of the Week, South Dakota linebacker Nate Ewell as Newcomer of the Week, and UNI wide receiver/return specialist Sergio Morancy as Special Teams Player of the Week.
In Illinois State's 35-13 win against North Dakota, Niekamp led his team with 10 tackles, a sack, and three pass breakups. The defense limited North Dakota to 266 yards and forced two turnovers while recording five tackles-for-loss.
Throughout the season, Niekamp has been a key player for the Redbirds. He leads his team and ranks second in the MVFC with 99 tackles (42 solo). Additionally, he is fourth in tackles for loss with 10.5, has added 2.5 sacks, and shares both team and league lead in interceptions with three.
Looking ahead, No. 12 seed Illinois State will face Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau during the first round of the FCS Playoffs on Saturday, November 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Houck Field.
