Illinois State secured a victory over Southeast Missouri State in the first round of the 2024 FCS Playoffs, held at Houck Field. The Redbirds, with a record of 10-3, capitalized on eight turnovers from SEMO to score 28 points and win the game 35-27.
The game began with SEMO taking an early lead through a touchdown pass from quarterback Paxton DeLaurent to Dorian Anderson. Illinois State responded quickly, tying the score with a touchdown run by Wenkers Wright following a strong kickoff return by Seth Glatz.
A pivotal moment came when Keondre Jackson intercepted a pass, leading to Tommy Rittenhouse connecting with Daniel Sobkowicz for a 62-yard touchdown. Further interceptions and turnovers allowed Illinois State to extend their lead significantly by halftime.
In the second half, SEMO attempted to rally but was thwarted by another interception returned for a touchdown by Jackson. Despite narrowing the gap towards the end of the game, SEMO's efforts fell short as Illinois State held on for the win.
Coach Brock Spack's team forced eight turnovers—five interceptions and three fumble recoveries—setting a new mark for SEMO in their Division I history. Rittenhouse played a key role in offense with two passing touchdowns and completing 24-of-36 passes for 277 yards. Sobkowicz stood out with seven receptions totaling 136 yards.
Defensively, Mark Cannon Jr. led Illinois State with nine tackles and three pass breakups. Tye Niekamp contributed significantly as well with seven tackles and an interception.
Following this victory, Illinois State is set to face UC Davis next Saturday in California for the second round of the playoffs.
