Illinois State University's men's golf team has announced the signing of two promising recruits for the 2025-26 season. Head coach Ray Kralis confirmed that Gonzalo Cuellar from Madrid, Spain, and Sam Ottwell from Alton, Illinois, have signed Athletic Financial Aid Agreements to join the Redbirds.
Cuellar brings a strong background as a member of the Spanish U18 National Team and has achieved significant success in World Amateur Golf Ranking events. He boasts two wins and 20 top-10 finishes in 36 events. Coach Kralis expressed confidence in Cuellar's potential impact on the team: "I look for Gonzalo to make a positive impact as soon as he gets to campus." Cuellar also secured victories at prestigious tournaments such as the U18 Madrid Open and the Faldo Series Finals Spain Championship.
Sam Ottwell is recognized as the top-ranked player in Illinois' Class of 2025 by the American Junior Golf Association. His accomplishments include setting his school's record for the lowest 18-hole tournament score and achieving high placements in state finals and other competitions. Kralis praised Ottwell's resilience and focus: "Sam is a gamer...His success both academically and athletically speaks to his level of discipline and motivation."
The Redbirds are set to begin their spring season on February 17, 2025, at the Border Olympics in Houston, Texas.
