Marquette took an early lead and maintained control throughout the game. The Golden Eagles secured a 20-7 advantage in the first quarter and extended it to 39-21 by halftime. Illinois State attempted a comeback in the third quarter, reducing Marquette's lead to 41-29, with Shannon Dowell contributing six points during this period. However, Marquette regained momentum and finished the third quarter with a commanding 61-35 lead.
Shannon Dowell led Illinois State with 12 points, while Nevaeh Thomas and Addi Martin added 11 and 10 points respectively. Despite these efforts, Illinois State recorded season lows in both shooting percentage (40%) and total points scored (57).
Dowell and Thomas have consistently reached double figures in scoring for Illinois State this season, averaging 14.8 and 13.6 points per game respectively. Martin also achieved double figures for the seventh time this season.
The Redbirds had previously dominated on rebounds in four consecutive games but were outperformed by Marquette on Sunday, who held a significant 42-25 advantage on the boards.
