The Illinois State women's tennis team faced a challenging match on Monday in Iowa City, where they were defeated by the Iowa Hawkeyes with a score of 7-0. The competition took place at the Hawkeye Women's Tennis and Recreation Complex.
In doubles action, the Redbirds' pair Lana Caculovic and Silvia Pomarolli were overcome by Tereza Dejnozkova and Barbora Pokorna with scores of 6-2, 6-2. Another setback for ISU occurred when Nuria Sanz and Nicole Iosio lost in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, falling 7-6 (5).
During singles play, Illinois State was unable to secure any victories against their Big Ten opponents. At No. 1 singles, Lana Caculovic was defeated by Daianne Hayashida with scores of 6-3, 6-3. Silvia Pomarolli faced Tereza Dejnozkova at No. 2 singles and lost 6-3, 6-2. Emma Lindh was swept by Marisa Schmidt at No. 3 singles with scores of 6-3, 6-0. In a closely contested match at No. 4 singles, Nuria Sanz narrowly lost to Nikita Vishwase with scores of 6-4, 7-5.
Other results included Pia Kranholdt defeating Elena Jankulovska at No. 5 singles (7-6 (4), 6-1) and Barbora Pokorna overcoming Nicole Iosio at No. 6 singles (6-3, 6-3). Additionally, Sally Xu bested Sophie Marie Lowe at No. 7 singles with scores of 6-4, 6-1.
Looking ahead, the Redbirds will host the Western Illinois Leathernecks on Sunday, January 26th at Evergreen Racquet Club with matches beginning at 12:30 p.m.
