The American Lung Association has designated January as Radon Action Month to raise awareness about radon, a gas referred to as the "silent killer." Radon is a radioactive gas that emerges from the bedrock beneath Illinois. The technology exists to test air in homes and buildings for radon.

In response, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) annually launches its Radon Awareness Campaign during this month. The campaign aims to educate residents of Illinois about the risks associated with radon and encourages them to test their buildings.

IEMA advises homeowners to hire licensed professionals for radon testing. A list of radon testing professionals is available through the agency.
