Illinois State women's tennis defeats Butler in away match

The Illinois State women's tennis team secured a victory over Butler University on Wednesday, with a 4-1 win inside the Bulldog Tennis Bubble. The Redbirds achieved three singles victories and claimed the doubles point, bringing their season record to 4-3, while Butler remains winless at 0-7.

In singles matches, Silvia Pomarolli won against Norah Balthazor in straight sets at No. 2, scoring 7-6 (4), 6-4. Nuria Sanz also triumphed at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Emma Beavin. Freshman Nicole Iosio completed the singles wins by defeating Lauren Cook with a first set score of 6-2 and winning the second-set tiebreaker 7-6 (5).

In doubles play, ISU swept all three matches. Lana Caculovic and Pomarolli secured a victory at No. 1 with a score of 6-2. At No. 2, Emma Lindh and Elena Jankulovska won decisively with a score of 6-3. Sanz and Iosio rounded out the doubles victories with a close match against Beavin and Balthazor, finishing at 6-4.

Head coach Maja Kovacek expressed satisfaction with the team's performance: "We did a great job showing up with good energy from the start. We played solid doubles, I'm happy with how we handled the run they made midway through singles matches to clinch the fourth point. This was a great team effort from everyone," she stated.

The Redbirds are set to travel next to Huntington, West Virginia for consecutive matches against Marshall Thundering Herd on February 21 and Radford Highlanders on February 22.
