The opening game of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge saw a tightly contested match between Illinois State and BYU, resulting in a narrow 1-0 victory for BYU. Both teams displayed strong pitching performances during the midday game at Nancy Almaraz Field on Thursday.
The Cougars improved their record to 5-0 by capitalizing on an error to score an unearned run. Meanwhile, the Redbirds' record fell to 1-5.
In terms of offensive highlights, Addison Masching went 1-for-3, and Julia Larson went 1-for-2 for Illinois State. Pitcher Paige McLeod had a solid performance with seven innings pitched, allowing six hits and one unearned run while striking out three.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when BYU's Hailey Morrow singled and advanced to third base due to an outfield error. She subsequently scored on an RBI single, providing BYU with the decisive lead. Despite McLeod's efforts in allowing no earned runs over seven innings, the Redbird offense was limited to two hits by BYU's pitchers.
