One year after achieving a program record for single-tournament scoring, the Illinois State Redbirds are set to return to the Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. The team aims to defend their title from last season at the event scheduled for February 17-18 at the Laredo Country Club.
The tournament will feature several teams ranked by Clippd National Rankings, including Houston (47), Sam Houston (62), and New Mexico State (68). Other participants include Michigan, Rice, Troy, Miami, Louisiana, Wright State, Augusta, ULM, Illinois State itself ranked at 151st place, UTRGV, Lamar, and Houston Christian.
The Redbird lineup includes TJ Barger starting on the 5th hole; Alex McCulla on the 6th; Will Troy on the 7th; Pietro Pontiggia on the 8th; and Jack Paeglow on the 9th. This shotgun start is scheduled for 8 a.m.
Illinois State University has been part of this tournament since fall 2021. Last year they achieved a record-breaking score of -32 with an overall score of 832. Valentin Peugnet tied a school record with his individual score of 199 during that event.
The Laredo Country Club is known as "the hidden oasis of South Texas" and offers challenging play over its expansive course built on former ranch land. It features strategically designed putting greens and four different tee markers ranging from 5785 yards for ladies to over 7241 yards from championship tees.
