Illinois State improves in second round at Border Olympics

Illinois State University's golf team made notable progress during the second round of the 2025 Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas. The team improved their score by eight strokes compared to the first round, placing them within 10 strokes of achieving a top-10 finish.

Louisiana currently leads with a total score of 572 over two rounds. Following closely are Houston with 575, New Mexico State with 576, and both Michigan and Miami tied at 579. Other teams ahead of Illinois State's score of 600 include Rice at 582, Louisiana Monroe at 587, Sam Houston at 588, Lipscomb at 589, Troy at 591, UTRGV at 593, Lamar at 595, Wright State and Augusta both tied at 599. Houston Christian trails behind with a score of 613.

Two players from Illinois State stand out after the first two rounds. Alex McCulla and TJ Barger are tied for the 40th position with scores of 148 each; McCulla achieved this through rounds of 77 and an impressive second-round score of 71 while Barger maintained consistency with two rounds of 74.

Will Troy is currently tied for the 66th spot with combined scores from rounds of 78 and 76 totaling to a score of 154 on the par-71 course. Meanwhile, Jack Paeglow and Pietro Pontiggia share the same total score of a matching pair of rounds scoring a cumulative result that places them tied for the position as well.

The final round will see Illinois State competing alongside Wright State, Augusta, and Houston Christian on various holes ranging from the fourteenth to eighteenth.
