FOIA Request to Livingston County Sheriff's Office Regarding Inmates with ICE Detainers on February 18, 2025.
As members of the McLean County Times, we have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Livingston County Sheriff's Office. Our request pertains to records and documents related to inmates who have had an Immigration Detainer issued by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency lodged against them since January 29, 2024.
In addition, we are seeking information regarding requests from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security concerning civil enforcement that falls under the purview of the TRUST Act and Illinois VOICES Act. Furthermore, we are requesting access to any Immigration Detainers received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security which are reportable under these same acts.
As a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs, access to public records is essential for us in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
We believe that as media professionals involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver for this request.
It should be noted that we are part of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit corporation that assists news media companies, publications, and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies using Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws. Our aim is to shed light on government actions and help inform the American electorate.
