The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team is preparing for a historic matchup against Wabash College on Wednesday, March 5. The Titans are entering the game with an impressive 5-0 record, marking their best start to a season in the program's history. The match will take place at Tucci Stadium with a scheduled start time of 6:30 p.m.
In the past, Illinois Wesleyan's most successful start was during the 2019 season when they achieved a 4-0 record. That year, they ended with a 16-2 overall record, suffering defeats only to Salisbury and Rhodes College in the NCAA tournament.
The team's fifth victory this season came in their home opener on March 1 against Albion College, which concluded with a close score of 13-10. Senior Sam Weinberg led the scoring with six points from five goals and one assist. Sophomore Timothy McHugh contributed significantly by leading with five assists. Senior Nick Schroeder excelled at faceoff by winning 13 out of 21 attempts. Defensively, senior Sam Skelton had an outstanding performance tying his career-best with four turnovers and achieving a new high of seven ground balls. Freshman Jaymeson Zachery secured his first collegiate win as goalkeeper with 13 saves.
Illinois Wesleyan is currently ranked ninth in Division III for assists, largely due to McHugh who stands seventh nationally averaging 4.20 assists per game. The team also holds notable rankings in total points, ground balls, and faceoff winning percentage within Division III standings.
This upcoming contest will be the inaugural meeting between Illinois Wesleyan and Wabash College. Wabash enters the game holding a record of 3-1 after experiencing their first loss to Ohio Northern on March 1.
