The state of Illinois has reportedly spent over $1.6 billion on health benefits for undocumented immigrants in the past five years, according to an audit by the Illinois Auditor General. The programs, Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors (HBIS) and Health Benefits for Immigrant Adults (HBIA), were initiated by the Pritzker administration to provide taxpayer-funded health benefits to undocumented immigrants. However, the costs were significantly underestimated.

The HBIS program, targeting individuals over 65, cost 84% more than anticipated. Meanwhile, the HBIA program for those aged 55-64 exceeded initial projections by 282%, and for ages 42-54, it was 286% higher than expected. Overall, these programs have cost taxpayers $1.6 billion from fiscal years 2021 to 2024. The estimated cost for the current fiscal year is $629 million but previous overruns cast doubt on this figure's accuracy.

In a recent budget address, Governor Pritzker proposed ending the HBIA program while continuing HBIS for seniors. Rep. Bunting stated, "I am a co-sponsor of House Bill 1456, which would end taxpayer funded health benefits for undocumented immigrants."

Additionally, Illinois residents are reminded that May 7 marks the deadline for obtaining a REAL ID required for air travel and access to certain federal buildings. Residents can acquire a REAL ID at local Secretary of State facilities with appropriate documentation.

This week also marks Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Illinois as designated by the National Weather Service and Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Residents are encouraged to be prepared for severe weather events such as tornadoes and lightning storms.

Rep. Bunting expressed gratitude after speaking to students at Prairieland CEO class about experiential learning opportunities supported by local business partners and schools.

Illinois currently faces a backlog of unpaid bills totaling approximately $2.3 billion submitted to the Comptroller's office awaiting payment when funds become available.
