House Republican lawmakers convened at the Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, to address public safety concerns and propose a legislative plan aimed at improving conditions for families across the state. The press conference was led by House Republican Floor Leader Patrick Windhorst, Assistant Minority Leader John Cabello, and State Representative Dennis Tipsword.

The legislators, all with backgrounds in law enforcement, have been instrumental in developing a legislative package focused on restoring public safety. Among the proposed measures is HB 1743, sponsored by Rep. Tipsword, which has gained bipartisan support. This bill proposes a 20-day timeframe for the Department of Human Services to expedite care for mentally and developmentally marginalized incarcerated individuals. Currently, these individuals face an average wait time of 87 days for necessary care, with local jails bearing the costs.

Rep. Tipsword emphasized the importance of providing timely treatment to reduce recidivism: “We must do everything we can to help people get the treatment they need in an effort to stop the circle of recidivism.” He expressed pride in standing alongside his colleagues advocating for legislation that aims to enhance public safety and ensure criminals remain incarcerated.
