Illinois Wesleyan men's tennis splits matches against Wheaton and Elmhurst universities

Illinois Wesleyan University's men's tennis team played two matches in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin on Saturday, April 5th. The team first faced Wheaton University, where they lost with a score of 5-2, before bouncing back with a win against Elmhurst University, sweeping the match 7-0.

During the match against Wheaton, Ian Turnbull, a junior from Bloomington, Illinois, led the team with a victory at the No. 1 singles position, achieving set scores of 6-3 and 6-4. Ben Vigneri, another junior hailing from Casper, Wyoming, secured a win at No. 2 singles. Vigneri won the first set 6-4, lost the second in a tiebreaker 7-6 (9), but prevailed in the deciding third set with a super tiebreaker victory of 10-8. Despite these individual successes, IWU couldn't secure further wins and left with a 5-2 loss.

In the follow-up match, Illinois Wesleyan took on Elmhurst University. This time the team rallied to a decisive 7-0 victory. The team's doubles players led the effort, starting with a commanding sweep. Ian Turnbull and Ryan McCoy won at No. 1 doubles with a 6-0 score. Thad Dillow and Griffin Hammond also posted a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, while Chase Tomecki and Sebastian Rasquin completed their match with the same score at No. 3 doubles.

The singles matches followed with Turnbull and Vigneri again coming out on top, with Turnbull taking No. 1 singles in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Vigneri followed suit at No. 2 singles with scores of 6-1, 6-2. Ryan McCoy, Dillow, and Hammond also secured wins, and Tomecki finalized the 7-0 sweep with a victory at No. 6 singles, winning 6-0 in both sets.

The Titans are set to host Carroll University at Evergreen Racquet Club on Friday, April 11th at 3 p.m.
