FOIA Request to Illinois State University Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in governmental affairs, we at the McLean County Times have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Illinois State University. This request seeks detailed information about the university's current Chinese National students, including their departmental affiliations and scholarship details.
Our request specifically asks for documents or lists that show all current students who are Chinese Nationals and their respective departments. If privacy concerns prevent the release of individual names, we have requested a total count of these students, broken down by department.
Additionally, we are seeking information on scholarships awarded to these students. This includes the amount each student receives and the source of each scholarship. We have also requested a list of recipients affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council if not already covered in our previous request.
Furthermore, we are interested in understanding how Illinois State University monitors its students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard intellectual property and other confidential information. We have asked for any relevant policies or procedures that outline these protective measures.
This FOIA request is made on behalf of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency through investigative journalism. As members of the media, access to public records is crucial for us to hold public institutions accountable and provide valuable insights to the public. We believe this qualifies us for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We look forward to receiving this information promptly and will continue our efforts to inform the American electorate about important issues affecting our educational institutions.
