The fall semester has begun at Illinois State University, and the athletics department is seeing increased activity and optimism. Dr. Jeri Beggs, Director of Athletics, addressed Redbird Nation with a summary of recent achievements and plans for the upcoming year.

Illinois State secured the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) All-Sports Trophy for the fifth time in six years, marking its 17th win in program history. The strong performances by track & field and golf programs contributed significantly to this result.

Fundraising efforts brought in more than $6 million, making it the second-highest total in ISU Athletics history. Forty major gifts of $25,000 or more were part of this fundraising success.

Season ticket sales have risen across all four ticketed sports—Football, Volleyball, Men's Basketball, and Women's Basketball—for the second consecutive year. Community engagement also continues with events such as Ballin' on Beaufort Vol. 3 returning to Uptown Normal on October 1.

Redbird Football returned to the playoffs in 2024 and holds a national ranking of sixth place in several preseason polls for 2025. The team will open its home season on September 6 under Coach Spack’s leadership.

Several coaching contracts were extended over the summer: Coach Pedon, Coach Gillespie, and Coach Kralis will continue leading their respective teams. Three new head coaches joined Illinois State: Cassandra Ringer for Gymnastics, Jackie Szymoniak for Women's Golf, and Maja Kovacek will now lead both Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs.

The men’s basketball program was featured in Sports Illustrated for retaining its core roster despite changes brought by the transfer portal and NIL policies.

A major alumni donation from Jay Bergman enabled upgrades to football facilities; Jay and Lori Bergman Field will debut on September 6 as one of ISU Athletics’ largest gifts ever received.

Recently, a refreshed version of Reggie the Redbird mascot was introduced at a donor event. The update aimed to provide a more athletic and comfortable costume while maintaining Reggie’s traditional spirit.

Dr. Beggs encouraged continued support through joining the Weisbecker Athletic Fund, purchasing season tickets, wearing team gear from the Redbird Spirit Shop, supporting local businesses like Destihl with ‘Bird Brew,’ and attending games.

"Redbird Nation, your support makes everything possible. We're ready for a big year –let's make it one to remember," said Dr. Jeri Beggs.
