Illinois Wesleyan women's tennis opens season with narrow win over Lawrence

The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team began its season with a 4-3 win over Lawrence University on Thursday in Bloomington, Illinois. The Titans now hold a 1-0 record, while the Vikings move to 0-2.

Lawrence secured the doubles point by winning two out of three matches. Adia Douglas and Elana Religioso won their match for Illinois Wesleyan at third doubles, defeating Sky Shinohara and Madelena Priest 6-3.

In singles play, freshman Adia Douglas gave the Titans their first point with a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles. Elana Religioso followed with another win at No. 6 singles. Junior Olivia Bell added a win at No. 4 singles after dropping the first set but recovering to take the match in a tiebreak.

Sophomore Gabi Lipske clinched the overall victory for Illinois Wesleyan by winning her match at No. 2 singles in three sets, including a close tiebreak in the final set.

The Titans will continue their homestand on Monday, September 8, when they host Illinois College. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

Singles results included Clara Hills (LU) defeating Amber Ehrlich (IWU) at No. 1 singles and Logan Kane (LU) defeating Katie Van Heuklon (IWU) after Van Heuklon retired due to injury.

Doubles results saw Anna Vanden Acker and Logan Kane (LU) defeat Olivia Bell and Amber Ehrlich (IWU), while Clara Hills and Tess McGlenn (LU) overcame Katie Van Heuklon and Gabi Lipske (IWU).
