Illinois State swimming & diving wins season opener against Quincy

Illinois State University's swimming and diving team began its season with a strong performance, securing a 180-82 victory over Quincy on Friday at Horton Pool. The Redbirds won 12 events during the meet.

The event started with Illinois State's 200 Medley relay team of Chloe Tyler, Hailey Fris, Mia Snow, and Ella Turken winning the first race with a time of 1:47.62.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, sophomore Hope Westphal finished first in 11:05.33, followed by senior Maya Burkstrand in second place at 11:23.96.

Sophomore Amelia Murphy led a podium sweep for Illinois State in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.07. She was joined by sophomore Ines Kieffel and junior Sylvia Admire, who finished second and third respectively.

Senior Chloe Tyler took first place in the 100-yard backstroke at 58.08 seconds. Junior Bailey Gott made her debut as a Redbird with a runner-up finish at 58.72 seconds, while senior Delaney Boulden placed third.

Freshman Ava Ostendorf earned her first collegiate win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.53, while sophomore Hailey Fris came in second.

The Redbirds also swept the podium in the 200-yard butterfly, where senior Giulia Basco claimed victory at 2:06.33, followed by sophomore Avery Watson and freshman Megan Sego.

Graduate student Mia Snow won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.20 seconds as Illinois State again swept all three podium spots; senior Ella Turken was second and freshman Elle Dameworth placed third.

Sophomore Alexandra Davis recorded her first career win in the 100-yard freestyle (53.63), joined on the podium by Kieffel and senior Adi Luker.

Tyler secured another win for Illinois State in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.87), followed by Gott and Fris for another sweep.

Ostendorf picked up her second event win of the day in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.52).

Westphal added another victory to her tally by winning the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.34), while Murphy finished just behind her for another one-two finish for Illinois State.

Snow earned her second individual win of the meet by taking first place in the 100-yard butterfly (56.43), with Turken finishing as runner-up.
