The Normal Fire Department is participating in the Knox Box program, which aims to provide emergency responders with non-destructive access to buildings during emergencies. The Knox Box is a secure, heavy-duty metal box installed on the exterior of businesses or residences and contains keys for firefighters and paramedics to enter when responding to fire alarms or other emergencies.
"Any building, other than a one or two family dwelling, that has an automatic alarm system which is capable of dialing a remote station for Fire Department notification as described in NFPA72 shall have an approved access box installed in an accessible location approved by the Fire Department," according to Section 1-3.4.6 of the Municipal Code for the Town of Normal.
Knox Boxes are recommended for all commercial properties and required for any property with a fire alarm or sprinkler system. Commercial versions can hold multiple keys, while residential boxes typically hold one or two keys. Property owners not required by code may still choose to install a Knox Box to allow emergency responders faster entry without waiting for a key-holder or causing property damage.
Residents and business owners can order Knox Boxes online at http://www.KnoxBox.com. After purchasing, they should contact the Normal Fire Department if they need assistance with installation or selecting an appropriate mounting location—usually near the main entrance at an accessible height. Once installed, owners should arrange for their master keys to be secured inside the box by contacting the department at 309-454-9689.
If there are changes to keys in the future, the fire department can assist with updating them as needed. Users are reminded that each Knox Box is specifically keyed for use by the Normal Fire Department; relocating outside of town will require purchasing a new box compatible with local authorities. Those moving within Normal should notify the Prevention Division at 309-454-9616 so records can be updated.
For further information about the program, residents can contact the Prevention Division during regular business hours.
