The Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal has announced the continuation of its monthly Sensory Night series, coinciding with Autism Acceptance Month. The event takes place from 3 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month and is designed for families living with disabilities and sensory sensitivities.

Beth Whisman, executive director of the Children’s Discovery Museum, stated, “Sensory Nights ensure the Museum is a place where all families can create positive memories and play together. These evenings are a time for kids to explore at their own pace. For parents and caregivers, it’s a time they can share a common experience with families who understand the unique challenges they navigate. Families have shared with us that they appreciate the opportunity to relax, and they don’t feel outside pressures to explain how their child might express joy or frustration.”

The Sensory Nights program began as a pilot initiative aimed at improving accessibility by working with community partners. It has since developed into a regular offering after its introduction in partnership with Autism McLean in 2024.

Whisman noted, “We started this program with direct feedback from local families who were generous enough to share their adventures and ordeals within our museum. We will continue to ask for feedback and improve.”

During Sensory Nights, visitors can access sensory bags at the front desk containing communication cards, noise-reducing headphones, light-reduction glasses, fidget toys, and other items to support accessibility. Quiet spaces are available throughout the museum for visitors needing a break, while staff members provide activities tailored to various sensory needs such as heavy work activities or tactile exploration.

“Autism Acceptance Month is an annual reminder all children experience the world differently every day,” said Whisman. “We want all families to feel welcomed and supported. We especially want to create a dialogue that invites honest feedback and learning.”

Admission to Sensory Night is included with regular entry fees. More information about inclusive offerings can be found on the Sensory Friendly page of the Children’s Discovery Museum website.

The Children’s Discovery Museum aims to inspire learning through play and provides updates via its website and social media channels.
