Beginning June 2, Chippewa Street in the Savannah Green subdivision will be closed for reconstruction. The closure will affect the section between Redman Street and Henry Street. The Town of Normal is asking drivers to avoid the area and exercise caution nearby.
This work is part of a broader effort by the Town of Normal to rehabilitate and upgrade streets and alleys in the Savannah Green subdivision. The project began in 2024. The subdivision, built in the early 2000s, has seen its roads and alleys deteriorate faster than expected. The Town attributes this to material and workmanship issues during initial construction, as well as high groundwater levels.
In 2024, the Town repaired roads, manholes, inlets, alley underdrains, and sidewalks. The current phase will focus on Chippewa Street, which was not included in last year’s work.
Residents will see some changes during the project. Garbage and recycling pickup will continue from the alleys, but some residents may need to place their bins on the opposite side of the street. The Town will contact those affected directly. Mail delivery may also be disrupted. The Town is working with the United States Postal Service to identify impacted residents. Those affected can pick up their mail at the Normal Post Office at 200 W. North Street after 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday mail will be available the following Monday. Parking will not be allowed on Chippewa Street while construction is underway.
The Town emphasized its commitment to keeping residents informed. "The Town of Normal recognizes the importance of regular communication and is committed to keeping residents informed." Residents are encouraged to sign up for text notifications at Normalil.gov/NotifyNormal, monitor the NextDoor platform for updates, and visit the project page at Normalil.gov/SavannahGreen.
