Illinois State Senator Chapin Rose has criticized Governor JB Pritzker's recent focus on a $1.4 million blackjack win and new taxes, suggesting it sends the wrong message to families facing rising costs. Rose made his statement on the social media platform X.
"As families tighten their budgets to afford gas, groceries, and property taxes, Governor Pritzker is celebrating a $1.4 million blackjack win in Vegas — all while pushing new taxes that hit working families and seniors," said Thomas Chapin Rose, State Senator for Illinois. "He offers to donate it months later, only after reporters ask questions."
According to AP News, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker confirmed last week that he won approximately $1.4 million playing blackjack during a trip to Las Vegas, as revealed in his 2024 federal tax return. When questioned by reporters in Chicago on October 16, 2025, Pritzker described himself as "incredibly lucky" and said his intention to donate the winnings to charity; however, no specific timeline was provided for this donation.
Household expenses continue to be a concern for residents of Illinois, particularly with regard to fuel prices. As of October 25, 2025, AAA reports that the statewide average price for regular gasoline is $3.25 per gallon, compared to a national average of around $3.06. These prices are updated daily and can vary depending on the county and metropolitan area within Illinois.
Recent state budgets have introduced new revenue streams through changes in taxation. On June 16, 2025, Governor Pritzker signed HB 2755 (Public Act 104-0006) as part of the fiscal year 2026 budget. This legislation increases revenues through higher corporate-related taxes and expanded levies on areas such as sports wagering and tobacco products, according to tax advisories.
Senator Rose represents Illinois' 51st District as a Republican. He was first elected to the Illinois House in 2002 and then to the Senate in 2012, serving continuously in the General Assembly since 2003. His district covers parts of central and east-central Illinois, with a focus on fiscal and economic issues.
