Town of Normal Human Relations Commission met Nov. 14.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1. CALL TO ORDER 

Chairperson Janessa Williams called the regular meeting of the Normal Human Relations Commission (“HRC”) to order at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

2. ROLL CALL 

Mr. Sheahan called the roll with the following persons:

Benjamin Ryburn

Terry Brown

Sarah DeNeve

Janessa Williams

Srinivas Mikkilineni

Brian Peterson

Visitor Theo Metellus was also present.

3. PUBLIC COMMENT 

There were no public comments.

4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 

Commissioner Peterson moved to approve the minutes of October 17, 2023. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Brown and passed on a unanimous vote.

5. COMPLAINT UPDATE 

Mr. Sheahan discussed the status of the single pending complaint.

6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS 

Social Equity Summit

Commissioner Peterson discussed his work on the public service project component of the Social Equity Summit. Commissioner Peterson mentioned having a scavenger hunt at Normal Public Library and another at the Bloomington library, with the addition of a possible art/painting component or educational breakout boxes. Commissioner

Peterson also proposed having a pop up library. Chairperson Williams proposed having a scavenger hunt in Normal with a pop up library in Bloomington. Commissioner Ryburn suggested the HRC should include events for all ages. Commissioner Peterson inquired about marketing the event and Chairperson Williams responded.

Commissioner DeNeve mentioned the film component to be held at Normal Theater. Chairperson Williams reviewed the movie recommendations from Reverend Barber’s staff.

Commissioner DeNeve discussed her work on the housing justice seminar. Commissioner DeNeve mentioned that she reached out to Housing Justice Illinois, Prairie State Legal Services, and the Bloomington Normal Community Land Trust.

Commissioner Ryburn stated the Bloomington Normal NAACP will provide the environmental justice seminar. Commissioner Ryburn described the planned seminar and mentioned that the Ecology Action Center will also be involved.

2024 MLK Luncheon

Chairperson Williams talked about the logistics of the luncheon. Commissioner Peterson and Chairperson Williams discussed having a question and answer session at the end of the luncheon.

7. NEW BUSINESS / CONCERNS & ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Sponsorships and Profile Sheets

Chairperson Williams continued the matters of HRC sponsorships and Commissioner Profile Sheets to a subsequent meeting.

December Meeting

Commissioner Peterson motioned to add a December HRC meeting to the calendar. Commissioner Brown seconded the motion, which was passed unanimously.

8. ADJOURNMENT 

The meeting was adjourned at 6:44 pm.
