Spell-binding Border Security Symposium

(Bloomington, March 22, 2024) Over 100 concerned citizens attended a spell-binding Border Security Symposium on Friday evening to hear from Mr. Tom Homan, a government official who served during the Trump Administration as Acting Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Speakers included U.S. Congressman Darin LaHood, State Sen. Sally Turner, and State Rep. Dan Caulkins. Sheriff Matt Lane, Bloomington Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe, and numerous other elected officials were in the audience.

Those present heard personal narratives recounting the poignant tragedies woven into the fabric of illegal immigration. Attendees heard about the harsh and often tragic realities migrants face in search of hope and opportunity. They also learned about the problems presented by our insecure borders - both south and north. Listeners were amazed by the scope and intensity of the problems and threats illegal immigration presents to our nation.

The stories fostered empathy for undocumented aliens, consternation with criminals capitalizing on the situation, and outrage against the Biden administration, which is solely responsible for this intentional and avoidable human tragedy. There was nothing but words of praise for border security personnel who are hamstrung by President Biden’s policies and intentionally restrained from performing their duties to protect our nation. One clear takeaway is that the situation will only deteriorate unless the current administration is replaced.

Following a meet-and-greet reception with the keynote speaker, attendees heard over dinner from local leaders about how the deteriorating border security impacts our nation, state, and local community. Mr. Homan then addressed various aspects of illegal immigration, including its impact on national security, public safety, and the economy. He offered insights into potential solutions and strategies for addressing this multifaceted issue.

The event was hosted by the McLean County Republicans, whose goal is to promote safety and prosperity for all residents of McLean County through civil and responsible action. They promote fiscal responsibility by elected officials, support law and order, encourage business growth, and promote values that create strong families and communities, allowing McLean County to thrive.
