Rep. Bunting’s Springfield news update for July 12, 2024

Still time for summer reading program entries

Rep. Bunting's office has begun receiving completed Summer Reading slips but encourages new entries before the July 30 deadline. Participants who read at least eight books will be invited to an ice cream party. Slips can be submitted to offices in Dwight or Watseka, emailed to bunting@ilhousegop.org, or mailed to 342 W. Walnut St #2, Watseka, IL 60970.

Budget reduced funding for SWCDs

The recently passed state budget of $53.1 billion includes a significant reduction in funding for Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs), cutting aid to local drainage districts by nearly 50%. Only $4.5 million remains for state assistance to SWCDs this fiscal year. Rep. Bunting commented on the potential negative impact on Illinois' agricultural infrastructure and economy: "This is a significant cut... much of which is approaching the end of its useful life." The underfunding issue will be addressed upon return to Springfield.

See you at the fair!

Rep. Bunting will conduct traveling office hours throughout the 106th district this summer, starting on Wednesday, July 17 from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m., inside the South Commercial Building at the Iroquois County Fair. Additional dates will be announced later.

Stopping by the Gilman Agronomy Center

On Monday morning, Rep. Bunting visited Heritage FS Gilman Agronomy Center, touring facilities and discussing bridging gaps between rural and urban Illinois with local stakeholders: "It is important that we all work together to be good stewards of the land."

Our current bill backlog

Illinois currently has a total of $2,004,968,796 in unpaid bills awaiting payment by the Comptroller's office. This figure does not include unfunded debts such as pension liabilities exceeding $100 billion.
