The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team faced a challenging match against Carthage College, resulting in a 2-0 loss during the Homecoming finale on Saturday, October 5. This defeat places IWU at 2-7-1 overall and 0-1 in CCIW play, while Carthage improves to 5-2-3 and 1-1-0 in the league.

In the first half, junior Sammie Shanks from Bloomington, Illinois found opportunities down the sideline but was unable to capitalize due to overpowered passes. Freshman goalkeeper Grace Kiewiet from Leawood, Kansas made a significant save in the 24th minute, keeping Carthage scoreless until they scored off a corner kick in the 41st minute. This goal left IWU trailing by one as they entered the second half.

Carthage secured their victory with another goal in the 79th minute. Kiewiet managed to deflect an initial shot but an offside call nullified a potential third goal for Carthage. Throughout the game, Kiewiet recorded six saves compared to four by Carthage's goalkeeper. The Firebirds led significantly in shots (23-10) and corner kicks (14-2).

Illinois Wesleyan will conclude their home stretch with a CCIW matchup against Wheaton College on Wednesday, October 9.
