The Illinois State women's golf team commenced their participation in the 2024 NCAA East Lansing Regional with a notable performance from graduate student Ali Schrock. Schrock shot an even-par 72, marking her as the first Redbird golfer since Stacey Miller in 2009 to achieve an opening round score at or under par at a NCAA Regional.
The competition will continue on Tuesday morning with the second round starting at 9:05 a.m., an hour earlier than initially planned to avoid possible afternoon and evening storms.
The Redbirds finished the day with a team score of 311 on the challenging Forest Akers West course, placing them in 12th position with two days remaining. Southern California leads after the first round with a score of 281, followed by Pepperdine (283), Northwestern (284), Florida (287), Denver (290), Michigan State (291), Oklahoma State (291), Kentucky (292), Indiana (295), Augusta (298), and Oakland (302).
Schrock's performance included eight pars and one bogey on her first nine holes, followed by two birdies on her back nine. She concluded the day tied for 19th place with her even-par score.
Jinyoung Yun turned three shots over par after six pars on her front nine. Despite recording birdies early in her back nine, she finished six over par due to a challenging five-hole stretch, tying for 54th place.
Avalon Wodward achieved ten pars during her round, ending with an opening-round score of 81 and tying for 61st place. Michaela Kverkova and Vinisha Gunaseelan are tied for 64th and 66th respectively, scoring rounds of 82 and 84.
