Illinois State golfers Alex McCulla and Valentin Peugnet demonstrated resilience during the second round of the 2024 NCAA West Lafayette Regional. Despite challenging conditions, including a rain shower on the back nine, both players improved their performance compared to the opening round.
McCulla and Peugnet initially recorded scores of 76, four shots over par. In the second round, McCulla scored a 74 while Peugnet finished with a 77. These results placed them in ties for 53rd and 60th positions, respectively.
On Wednesday morning, the Redbirds will play their final course of the season at 10:01 a.m.
McCulla began his day with consecutive pars but faced difficulty on the third hole where his tee shot landed in deep grass, resulting in a double-bogey. He managed three straight pars followed by his first birdie on the seventh hole. A bogey on the eighth hole left him two shots over par as he completed the front nine. On the back half, McCulla maintained consistency with four pars before making another birdie on the fifth hole to reduce his score to one over par. After further pars and a bogey on the 17th hole, he concluded with a par to end at two-over-par for the day.
Peugnet started positively with a birdie on his first hole but experienced ups and downs throughout his round. He achieved another birdie on the sixth hole but encountered bogeys that left him even at turn's end. His back nine began with bogeys pushing him two shots over par; he finished after further struggles leading to an aggregate score of five-over-par for this round.
