Illinois State University baseball player Carter Monke has been recognized as the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Pitcher of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference on Monday morning.
Monke, a junior from Mount Olive, Illinois, delivered an impressive performance for the Redbirds during their series finale against Belmont on May 18. He pitched eight innings, allowing only one run and striking out four batters. This performance helped Illinois State secure the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MVC Tournament.
During the game, Monke retired four of the first batters he faced and seven out of ten initially. Although Belmont scored once in the sixth inning, Monke responded by retiring five consecutive batters, including three straight ground outs. This marked his second consecutive MVC win of the season.
He is noted as being "the first MVC Pitcher of the Week for ILS since Tanner Perry on April 8."
The Illinois State team will begin their participation in the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference Championships facing off against No. 3 seed Evansville on Wednesday morning at Charles H. Braun Stadium.
