Illinois Wesleyan University is reflecting on the life and legacy of Jason Jones, an alumnus who died in a plane crash on April 7, 2015. The tragedy also claimed the lives of Scott Bittner, Andy Butler, Tom Hileman, Aaron Leetch, Terry Stralow, and Torrey Ward.

Jones was a native of Lincoln, Illinois, and excelled in baseball and basketball during his time at IWU. He co-captained the 1990-91 basketball team with David Kunka to a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship victory. Jones ranks tied for 12th in all-time games played (110) and is 27th in career assists (211). As a Titan centerfielder, he had a .340 batting average over 109 games. His senior year performance included a .361 average with eight doubles, two home runs, and 27 RBIs.

After graduating from IWU, Jones earned a master's degree from Illinois State University and became a Senior Vice President at Wells Fargo Advisors. Known for his kindness and respect towards others, he built lasting friendships throughout his life.

Jones' spirit continues through Titan Athletics with traditions like the "Penny Story," where student-athletes receive a "lucky" penny to share as an act of goodwill. The Jason Jones True Titan Award honors students exemplifying high character within the athletic community.

Following the accident, Illinois State Athletics Department established "Redbird Remembrance," featuring seven columns symbolizing the loss of friends and colleagues. Project 7 was created by families affected by the tragedy to encourage acts of kindness each April 7.
