The Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team faced a challenging start to their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) season, suffering a 26-2 defeat against the University of Chicago. The match took place on Saturday, April 6, with IWU's overall record now standing at 5-6 and their conference record at 0-1. Meanwhile, Chicago improved its record to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW.
Sophomore Carleigh Fountain from Orland Park, Illinois, contributed two goals for the Titans. Senior Britney Maldonado from Hoffman Estates, Illinois, provided an assist during the game.
Junior goalkeeper Bri Kiser from Crown Point, Indiana, made nine saves over the course of the match. Hanson led with two ground balls for IWU, while six other players each managed one. Additionally, six players from IWU caused one turnover each.
Despite having more saves than Chicago (9-3), Illinois Wesleyan was outperformed in several areas including shots (41-6), ground balls (15-8), and caused turnovers (14-9). They also committed more turnovers with a total of 17 compared to Chicago's nine. The Maroons were successful on 13 out of 14 clears whereas IWU completed four out of nine.
Looking ahead, Illinois Wesleyan will host Carthage College in another CCIW matchup on Wednesday, April 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Tucci Stadium.
