The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a doubleheader sweep against Illinois College on March 26 at Inspiration Field. The Titans won the first game 13-8 and secured an 11-8 victory in the second game, improving their season record to 10-4, while Illinois College fell to 5-12.
In the first game, both teams showcased their offensive capabilities with a total of four home runs and 29 hits. Illinois Wesleyan took an early lead with RBI singles from Hailey Milgazo and Casey Wissmiller. A strategic double steal allowed Megan Fontanetta to score Elyssa Stenger, regaining the lead for IWU. Jen Kuhn's grand slam was pivotal in breaking open the game for the Titans.
Gianna Certa and Mallory Holland shared pitching duties, with Holland earning an extended save by striking out two over the final innings.
The second game saw IWU take a commanding six-run lead in the first inning. Despite Illinois College's efforts to close the gap, including taking a brief lead in the fourth inning, IWU regained control with key hits from Wissmiller and Ava Khoury.
Caroline Gatchell started as pitcher for IWU in game two, achieving three strikeouts over more than four innings. Holland again provided strong relief pitching to secure her second save of the year.
Illinois Wesleyan is scheduled to play against Lake Forest College on March 30 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
