Illinois Wesleyan University's women's soccer team secured a 1-1 draw against Augustana College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match on Wednesday night, October 16. The result brings IWU's record to 3-8-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the conference, while Augustana stands at 7-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in CCIW play.
Augustana outshot IWU with 23 attempts compared to the Titans' 17, but IWU led in shots on goal with nine to Augustana's seven. Freshman goalkeeper Grace Kiewiet from Leawood, Kansas, made six saves for IWU, while Augustana's keeper recorded eight saves.
The Vikings took an early lead with a header goal off a corner kick in the 27th minute. However, IWU responded before halftime when freshman Keira Robinson from Bloomington, Indiana, scored her first career goal with a long-range shot nearly 30 yards out.
Freshman Vanessa Gray from Burlington, Ontario, attempted two more shots before halftime but was thwarted by the Viking defense. The second half saw both teams evenly matched; IWU had eight shots to Augustana's eleven, with each goalkeeper making three saves.
Robinson attempted another long-range effort late in the game after receiving a pass from senior Tegan Timerman of Peoria, Illinois. This time, Augustana's goalkeeper deflected it into a corner kick for IWU. Despite setting up quickly for the corner kick, the Titans could not capitalize.
In the final minutes of play, Augustana earned a corner kick opportunity and took three consecutive shots. However, IWU successfully blocked two attempts while the third went off target.
Illinois Wesleyan will continue their CCIW campaign on Saturday, October 19 against Elmhurst University.
