The Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team emerged victorious against Aurora University with a 14-10 win in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The match took place on May 8 at Tucci Stadium, Bloomington, Ill. With this victory, IWU advances to face Tufts University in the second round of the national tournament.
Senior Gage Black scored a crucial man-up goal off an assist from senior Trystan Seeley, contributing to IWU's early lead. Senior Brendan Baumgarten also scored unassisted to push the Green and White ahead by two goals. Junior Nick Horrocks made a key save, while senior Alex Oximana's effort helped maintain momentum for IWU as Black extended their lead.
In the second quarter, junior Sam Weinberg netted his 28th goal of the season just 15 seconds in, thanks to quick ball movement from junior Jake Gisi. Despite Aurora's efforts to level the score at 4-all, IWU regained control with contributions from seniors Logan Gelling and Ike Eastburn.
Black continued his strong performance by assisting Seeley for another goal. Junior Sam Skelton added another point for IWU off a pass from Weinberg. Freshman Timothy McHugh set up Weinberg for yet another goal, while Eastburn increased their lead further.
Aurora mounted a five-goal run in the fourth quarter but Seeley broke through their defense to maintain IWU's lead. Weinberg secured victory with a late goal.
Weinberg led all players with six points on four goals and two assists. Black followed closely with three goals and one assist. Michael Rocco excelled at faceoffs with 16 wins out of 22 attempts and eight ground balls.
Ethan Hart gathered ten ground balls and tied for three caused turnovers alongside Kade Miers on defense. Colin Tervo secured his 13th win of the season after making three saves in the second half.
Illinois Wesleyan will now travel to Schenectady, NY to play against Tufts University on May 11 at Frank Bailey Field at Bertagna-Class of 1985 Stadium.
