An 88th-minute goal by junior Logan Shumaker led the Illinois Wesleyan University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Millikin University on Wednesday night at Frank M. Lindsay Field in Decatur, Illinois. The Titans improved their record to 4-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW).
The match began with Illinois Wesleyan taking an early lead in the 25th minute. Sophomore Sam Kedzior initiated the play with a punt that set up senior Sasha Tylnyy, who headed the ball forward to senior CJ Rodriguez. Rodriguez then delivered a through ball to junior Eli Warren, who scored from 20 yards out.
Kedzior made a crucial save early in the second half, stopping a penalty kick from Millikin and maintaining IWU's lead. However, Millikin equalized in the 60th minute.
With only two minutes remaining, Illinois Wesleyan capitalized on a free kick at midfield for the decisive goal. Tylnyy's header found Shumaker, who scored from 25 yards out to secure the win.
Kedzior finished the game with three saves and allowed just one goal. He is currently recognized as the CCIW Defensive Player of the Week.
The Titans are set to face North Park University on Saturday, October 14th at 3:30 p.m., following a match featuring IWU's women's soccer team.
