In a closely contested match, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team faced a narrow defeat against Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday, March 14, in Orlando, Florida. The Titans ended their spring break trip with a 5-4 loss, bringing their season record to 7-4. Meanwhile, Ohio Wesleyan improved to 6-3.
The match began with doubles play where sophomore Ian Turnbull and senior Ryan McCoy clinched a victory at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 win.
In singles competition, Illinois Wesleyan secured three victories at positions No. 2, 3, and 6. However, the team fell short as two matches were decided by super tiebreakers in favor of Ohio Wesleyan. Ryan McCoy emerged victorious at No. 2 singles after losing his first set 6-4; he rallied to win the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), and took the third set with a score of 10-8. Freshman Thad Dillow won his match at No. 3 singles with straight sets of 6-4 each. Senior Jordan Sibley-Diggs also delivered a win at No. 6 singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
Illinois Wesleyan will take a two-week break before resuming action on Saturday, March 30, when they host Elmhurst University for the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opener.
Singles competition results included Mark Siriwanichkul defeating Ben Vigneri (IWU) with scores of 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), and 10-3; Ryan McCoy defeating Marcelo Aguilar (OWU) with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), and 10-8; Thad Dillow defeating Kobe Francis (OWU) with scores of both sets being 6-4; Gabe Fogle defeating Zeke Cross (IWU) with scores of both sets being 6-4; Max Jody defeating Griffin Hammond (IWU) with scores of the sets being respectively: 4–6, 6–1 and 10–0; Jordan Sibley-Diggs defeating Elliot Spicer (OWU) with scores of both sets being respectively: 6–4 and 6–1.
In doubles competition results were as follows: Ian Turnbull/Ryan McCoy defeated Mark Siriwanichkul/Kobe Francis (OWU) by scoring an overall score of 8–5; Marcelo Aguilar/Elliot Spicer defeated Ben Vigneri/Zeke Cross by scoring an overall score of 8–4; Gabe Fogle/Rainer Holl defeated Thad Dillow/Griffin Hammond by scoring an overall score was recorded as 8–6.
