Illinois State University's women's basketball team is set to host Illinois Wesleyan for an exhibition game this Sunday at CEFCU Arena. The match, which begins at 2 p.m., offers free admission to all fans. Although there will be no broadcast available, the game can be followed live on the Varsity Network, WJBC AM 1230, and FM 102.1.
This exhibition marks the second consecutive preseason meeting between Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan. Last year's encounter ended with a decisive 94-56 victory for the Redbirds.
The Redbirds are coming off a successful season under head coach Kristen Gillespie, finishing with a 22-12 record and securing a spot in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). This achievement marked their fourth consecutive postseason appearance and included their first postseason win since 2013.
Key players from last season include DeAnna Wilson, who was named to the All-MVC Second Team; Kate Bullman, who made the All-MVC Defensive Team; and Shannon Dowell, who was selected for the All-MVC Freshman Team.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Maya Wong has been named to the All-MVC Preseason Second Team. Wong had an impressive previous season with career highs of 11.8 points and 4.2 assists per game while starting all 34 games for Illinois State. She also reached a milestone by surpassing 1,000 career points.
