Illinois State University's women's basketball team secured a victory over Illinois Wesleyan in a preseason game held at CEFCU Arena. The match ended with a score of 101-86 in favor of the Redbirds.
Key performances came from Shannon Dowell and Nevaeh Thomas, each achieving double-doubles. Dowell contributed 23 points and 12 rebounds, scoring 16 points in the first half which helped establish a 51-34 lead for Illinois State. She was efficient from the field, making nine out of thirteen attempts and her only three-point shot.
Thomas added to the team's success with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She scored 12 points in the fourth quarter alone, including a personal five-point run that extended Illinois State's lead to 87-74.
Addison Martin also made significant contributions by scoring 18 points and securing eight rebounds for the Redbirds.
Despite trailing by as many as 23 points, Illinois Wesleyan managed to narrow the gap multiple times during the game. The Titans hit thirteen three-pointers and reduced their deficit to ten points with three minutes left in the fourth quarter. However, Illinois State maintained their advantage until the final buzzer.
The Redbirds will commence their official season on November 6 against Northwestern.
