The Illinois Wesleyan University women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with a victory over Earlham College. The match, held on Friday afternoon, March 14, ended with a score of 5-2 in favor of IWU. This win brings the Titans' record to 8-9, equaling their best season performance since the 2012-13 campaign. Earlham's record now stands at 3-5.
The Titans began by winning all three doubles matches. Sophomores Amber Ehrlich and Olivia Bell secured a win at No. 1 doubles with a score of 6-3. Freshmen Gabi Lipske and Katie Van Heuklon followed up with a victory at No. 2 doubles, finishing at 6-4. Senior Andie Wilson and junior Marianna Arias completed the sweep with a close win at No. 3 doubles, using a tiebreaker to end the match at 7-6.
In singles play, Ehrlich, Van Heuklon, Bell, and Wilson each achieved victories for IWU. Ehrlich overcame an initial set loss to win her match in three sets against Vanessa Akuaku from Earlham College. Van Heuklon also required three sets to defeat Mackenzie Davis after losing the second set without scoring.
Bell won her singles match comfortably in straight sets against Natlee McCann with scores of 6-2 and 6-1. Wilson sealed the overall victory for IWU by defeating Ella Flottman-Mullen in two sets.
Illinois Wesleyan will next face Loras College at home on Saturday, March 29. The event will include a ceremony honoring seniors Andie Wilson and Kate Christian before the match begins at 1 p.m.
Singles competition results were as follows:
1) Amber Ehrlich (IWU) defeated Vanessa Akuaku (EC-W) with scores of 3-6, 6-2, and 6-2.
2) Lawrencia Manu (EC-W) defeated Gabi Lipske (IWU) by scores of 6-2 and 6-2.
3) Katie Van Heuklon (IWU) defeated Mackenzie Davis (EC-W), winning two out of three sets.
4) Olivia Bell (IWU) won against Natlee McCann (EC-W).
5) Andie Wilson (IWU) triumphed over Ella Flottman-Mullen (EC-W).
6) Madison Ruwersma (EC-W) defeated Marianna Arias (IWU).
In doubles competition:
1) Amber Ehrlich/Olivia Bell (IWU) won against Vanessa Akuaku/Lawrencia Manu (EC-W).
2) Gabi Lipske/Katie Van Heuklon (IWU) secured their match over Mackenzie Davis/Natlee McCann (EC-W).
3) Andie Wilson/Marianna Arias clinched their game against Ella Flottman-Mullen/Madison Ruwersma through a tiebreaker.
