Senator Balkema has issued his weekly update, touching upon several legislative and community issues. In recent developments, an online survey showed that 80% of participants oppose Senate Bill 1872, which would ban plastic bags and impose a minimum fee on paper bags. Balkema stands against this bill, citing the financial strain it could impose on families already facing high costs for essentials. The senator emphasizes, "Instead of making life more expensive, we should be focusing on providing real relief."
Additionally, Democrat lawmakers have introduced a bill, Senate Bill 2254, proposing changes to residency restrictions for convicted sex offenders. Among other measures, the bill seeks to reduce the distance sex offenders must maintain from schools and playgrounds and to soften penalties for registry violations. Opposing the bill, Senate Republicans advocate for stricter measures, as supported by Balkema, who is co-sponsoring SB 284. "Rather than seeking to reduce safeguards," Balkema argues, "more should be done to hold those who abuse accountable for their crimes."
In a move to honor the historic Route 66, Senator Balkema has advanced Senate Joint Resolution 12 to declare 2026 as the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Year. The resolution, highlighting the highway's longstanding impact, has been successfully passed in the Senate and is now set for consideration in the House. Balkema stated, "I am proud to lead this effort to celebrate its 100th anniversary and preserve its legacy for future generations."
Elsewhere, the Illinois Treasurer’s Office is promoting agricultural awareness with the Cream of the Crop Photo Contest. Open to students aged 8 to 18, the contest offers scholarships for standout photographs that capture the essence of Illinois agriculture. The contest closes on June 13, and submissions can be made electronically.
