Town of Normal Human Relations Commission met April 15.

1. CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Janessa Williams called the regular meeting of the Town of Normal Human Relations Commission (“HRC”) to order at 5:17 p.m. on April 15, 2025.
2. ROLL CALL
Mr. Smith called the roll with the following persons:

3. PUBLIC COMMENT
No public comment.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Brown moved to approve the minutes of the March 18, 2025, meeting. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Peterson and passed with a unanimous vote.
5. COMPLAINT UPDATE
Mr. Smith noted that one complaint was still open, and that updates would be provided in a future meeting.
6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Commissioner Mikkilineni arrived and joined the meeting at 5:25 PM.
2026 MLK Award Ceremony Planning (no action needed)
Chairperson Williams introduced the matter and provided a progress update on discussions from the committee meetings so far and asked for considerations from the group.
Ideas regarding the 2026 event were discussed generally, including considerations for partnerships, a welcome event, and other information.
Social Equity Summit Considerations & Planning (no action needed)
Chairperson Williams introduced the matter, noting that a social equity summit in October would make the most sense. Discussion ensued on possible locations and partners for the event. The Commission agreed that the themes of housing and environmental justice would be best to focus on for this event.
7. NEW BUSINESS
No new business was discussed.
8. COMMENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Staff Liaison Smith provided the schedule of the upcoming Town of Normal City Council meetings in May, and noted the next HRC meeting is scheduled for May 20, 2025.
Details on multiple events were shared by members of the commission, including a volunteer project at the West Bloomington Revitalization Project Veggie oasis beginning late summer through early fall, a volunteer opportunity with the Eastern Food bank, a scholarship luncheon by Omega Psi Phi on June 7th, a MAPS Scholarship event at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, the annual Kite Festival by For a Better Tomorrow on June 7, 2025, Cultural Fest in August, and Juneteenth activities.
9. ADJOURNMENT
Commissioner Mikkilineni motioned to adjourn; Commissioner Peterson seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously, and the meeting was adjourned at 6:41 p.m.
