Illinois state golf team opens strong at NCAA Urbana Regional

URBANA, Ill. – The Illinois State men's golf team began their campaign at the 2025 NCAA Urbana Regional in eighth place after the opening round, posting a score of 289. Recent ISU graduate Alex McCulla led the team with a two-under-par round.

The tournament is hosted by 14th-ranked Illinois, who leads with a score of 277. Texas Tech and UNLV follow in second and third places, respectively. Illinois State trails teams such as Troy, Long Beach State, Marquette, and Oklahoma State while staying ahead of Pacific, NC State, North Carolina, Houston, and Wright State.

Illinois State will continue their effort at the Atkins Golf Club course for the second round alongside Pacific and Oklahoma State.

McCulla's performance included four birdies and two bogeys resulting in a two-under 69. His score ties for sixth among individual golfers in the field. Max Faucquez finished even-par with a score of 71. Other contributors were TJ Barger (73), Pietro Pontiggia (76), and Will Troy (76).

The Redbirds started on the par-four 10th hole playing through both halves of the course sequentially.

McCulla achieved consecutive birdies on holes 15 and 16 before finishing his day with further birdies on holes one and three. Faucquez made his NCAA Regional debut starting strong but ended even-par after scoring bogeys late in his round.

Barger recorded an eagle on hole one among other scores to finish two-over-par for the day. Troy had five birdies throughout his tumultuous round while Pontiggia completed his day with two birdies ending five-over-par.
