Illinois Wesleyan women’s soccer falls to No. 1 WashU at home

The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team was defeated 6-0 by top-ranked Washington University in St. Louis on Tuesday night at Neis Field in Bloomington, Illinois. The match marked the 27th consecutive game without a loss for WashU, which improved its record to 2-0-0 this season. The Titans dropped to 0-2-0.

WashU opened the scoring less than three minutes into the match with a set-piece goal from a corner kick. The Bears extended their lead in the 14th minute and added two more goals in the 26th and 28th minutes, taking a 4-0 advantage into halftime.

Illinois Wesleyan senior Maya Flemming made a key tackle to prevent another WashU scoring opportunity during the first half. Sophomore Vanessa Gray started her first career game as goalkeeper for the Titans and recorded nine saves but conceded four goals before halftime.

In the second half, Illinois Wesleyan created several chances but failed to score. Freshman Lauren Watson made her collegiate debut in goal, stopping four shots.

The Titans will play their next match on Saturday, September 6, traveling to Jacksonville, Illinois to face Illinois College at England Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
